FCC Path Cancellation

A licensee that permanently discontinues service on a path must notify the Federal Communications Commission of the discontinuance within 10 days.  Permanent discontinuance for PTP and MAS licenses is defined as 365 consecutive days during which a licensee does not operate (transmitting a test signal does not constitute operation).  To encourage efficient spectrum reuse, the Federal Communications Commission does not assess a filing fee to cancel a path.  Authorization will terminate even if the licensee fails to file a cancellation.

You can submit applications for path cancellation yourself by following the steps outlined below, or Black & Associates can prepare and file these applications on your behalf.

In the order entry process PTP paths are listed as:

Location A (Call Sign A Path Number A) to Location B (Call Sign B Path Number B)

We will file two applications for a PTP path cancellation, one for Call Sign A and one for Call Sign B.  Verify both ends of the path selection to ensure accuracy.  Paths using multiple frequencies may only be listed once, while those using multiple polarizations may appear twice.  Use the Notes section to specify specific handling instructions.

MAS paths are listed as:

Master Location (Call Sign Path Number)

Disclaimer -- we cannot guarantee that the steps outlined below apply to all situations nor can we ensure that the FCC will not make changes.  Use at your own risk.  If you are uncertain of your progress do not proceed to the 'Certification' page!  Use the 'Quit Application' link found near the top of each page to return to the main FCC License Manager page.  An incorrect filing could result in the loss of your filing fees and possibly your license.

Canceling a path can be done using the FCC License Manager.  The following steps assume that you intend to cancel a single path but leave the licenses intact.  If you wish to cancel the entire license refer to FCC License Cancellation.  The steps are:

  1. Gather your FRN and FCC License Manager password and the call sign of the location in question.
  2. Browse to the FCC License Manager and log-in using your FRN and password.
  3. Select 'My Licenses->Renew Licenses' from the left side panel.
  4. When the 'Select Licenses' page is displayed, ensure the 'Eligible' radio button is selected.
  5. Click the license of interest in the 'My Licenses Panel' then click 'Add' to move it to the 'Licenses to Update' panel.  If the 'My Licenses' panel is empty, there are no licenses eligible for renewal.  The system will allow you to select multiple licenses, but don't do this because you will likely get an error message later on. Click 'Continue' when you have selected the license.
  6. On the 'Select Updates' page leave all boxes unchecked and click 'Continue'.
  7. A new page format will open titled 'Application Information'.  On this page, read and answer the 'Attachments', 'Fees and Exemptions' and 'Waivers' sections.  Typical answers are 'No' for each.  Government entities and some non-profits may be able to answer 'Yes' to the fee exemption questions.  Click 'Continue' at the bottom.
  8. A page titled 'Applicant Information' will open.  Check and update each field as necessary.  Sometimes the 'Contact First Name/Last Name' or 'Attention To' fields are blank -- correct this to pass the error check later on.  DO NOT change the 'Legal Entity Type' or 'Entity Name' here -- contact us if you need to do so.  Click 'Continue' at the bottom.
  9. A page titled 'Ownership and Qualifications' will open.  Read each question to ensure it is answered correctly.  Don't change anything.  If you think anything needs changing, stop and contact us for directions.  Click 'Continue' at the bottom.
  10. A page titled 'Additional Certifications' will open.  Read each question and answer using the 'Yes/No' options.  If you can't answer 'Yes' to each, stop and contact us for directions.  Click 'Continue' at the bottom.
  11. A page titled 'General Certification Statements' will open.  Read each statement then enter your 'First Name', 'Last Name' and 'Title' at the bottom.  Click 'Continue'.
  12. A page titled 'Check Errors & Submit' will open.  This page should indicate that no errors were found.  If this is not the case, use the 'Back' button at the bottom of the page to check your work.  If the issue can't be identified, contact us for assistance.  Click 'Submit Application' if no errors are indicated.
  13. You will be asked to submit payment to cover the FCC application and regulatory fees.
  14. IMPORTANT:  Check the expiration date for the opposing end of the link -- it may need renewing as well.
